25 Years of Innovation: The ACM® Wallet Story

I write this Tribute of Thanks to our ACM Wallet users around the world — your support over these past 25 years has helped spread the word and introduce people to what we believe is the best wallet ever invented.

Why do I say it's the best? Because the ACM was the first — and still the only — mechanical wallet that allows you to select each card individually while protecting them from damage.

Back in 1999, I had an idea for a wallet that would organize my credit cards and protect their magnetic strips from being ruined. At the time, leather wallets were the norm — the only option for carrying cards and cash. My goal was to create something different, something better.

The Spark That Started It All

It all started one day at the supermarket checkout. I reached for my stack of cards, held together by a rubber band. As I fumbled for the right one, the rubber band snapped — and cards went flying everywhere. As I scrambled to pick them up, I tried to pay… but then my magnetic strip wouldn’t read. Embarrassed and frustrated, I walked out thinking, There has to be a better way.

Building the First ACM®Wallet

Within a week, I designed the first prototype of what would become the Auto Card Manager. The first patents were issued in July 2001, and not long after, the ACM Wallet was born. Over the years, we've redesigned it several times, adding more patents to protect its unique mechanical and ergonomic design.

Taking Flight with SkyMall™

People often ask, "How did the ACM become known around the world?"

The answer: SkyMall Magazine — a now-discontinued catalog once tucked into every seat pocket on nearly every commercial flight. SkyMall featured over 1,500 products you could buy online or by phone. For nearly 10 years, the ACM was one of its top-selling items — which meant it flew around the world millions of times.

In addition to print marketing, word of mouth from ACM users has been our greatest asset. Customers constantly recommend the ACM to anyone who asks — showing its benefits firsthand and proving its long-term reliability.

What Sets ACM® Apart from "Smasher" Wallets

It hasn’t been easy to challenge a century-old tradition. As time passed, many minimalist wallets entered the market. But most are what I call "Smasher" wallets — knockoffs that attempt to mimic the ACM’s concept but fall far short in function and durability.

These gimmicky wallets are often slightly smaller but offer none of the true benefits of an ACM. They crush and scrape your cards, making them hard to retrieve.

Honestly, they remind me of the same rubber-band disaster I experienced 25 years ago — a chaotic, disorganized mess. Even pop-up wallets grind cards together with each use and offer no individual selection.

The ACM®2.0 and 3.0: Reinventing the Classic

In 2023, we unveiled the ACM 2.0 — a radical redesign that improved everything. We reduced the size by 20% and the weight by 25%, simplified the internal mechanisms, and crafted a sleek one-piece body that adds strength and a modern aesthetic. Most importantly, the 2.0 comes with a full lifetime mechanical warranty — no questions asked.

This summer, we’ll debut the ACM 3.0, available in two refined finishes. With a new one-piece aluminum body, removable money clip, and optional accessories, it’s precision-forged and laser-cut to perfection. One version features a brushed aluminum finish for a clean, industrial feel, while the other offers a Black matte finish for a modern, luxurious vibe. And this is just the beginning — more colorways to come.

25 Years Later: A Legacy Built on Innovation

After 25 years, the ACM Wallet remains in a class of its own — the only wallet that offers true individual card selection, long-term card protection, and organized precision.
